Radio production consists of a DKY FM radio program, awareness-raising tours around selected issues, and the Youth Communicator Network of Central America.

DKY FM

This is our youth radio program. Using a commercial format, this program addresses controversial and taboo issues that affect the lives of Nicaraguan teenagers and youth, always in entertaining and provocative ways.

This program is broadcast live and simultaneously by five radio stations, thus guaranteeing wide national coverage. It is also rebroadcast on the radio’s website, thus allowing access to Spanish speaking publics from other countries.

DKY FM has a network of youth correspondents throughout Central America (with the exception of Belize) and through their information capsules, they show how youth from other countries are dealing with the issues addressed in the program.

Issue Awareness Tours (Giras Promotemáticas)

With the issue awareness tours, we want to create a personal face-to-face relation between the DKY FM audience and those youth who don’t necessarily listen to the program.

By getting out of the radio booth to engage in dialogue with youth, through games, contest and conversation, we raise awareness about the issues we address.

During these tours, the DKY FM staff visits different provinces in Nicaragua. Using a series of entertaining methodologies at high schools, public markets, parks and even malls, youth reflect, debate and discuss the issues that they face in daily situations.

Central America Correspondents Network

The correspondents’ network is one of the components of the Capacity-Building Strategy, and it is formed by 20 Central American youth communicators between 18 and 30 years of age.

For three years, the radio team has been training this network so that they develop the skills and techniques necessary to improve their work as communicators. We also work with them so that they can present different analyses and perspectives of the social problems that affect the youth population in their countries.

These young communicators work in commercial media and organizations. Some are not necessarily communication professionals or reporters, but nevertheless they play a key role in the construction of public opinion with their programs.

Besides their daily work, every week they share their information capsules on DKY FM. These capsules, which last a maximum of 2 and half minutes, present reports, news, interviews, and opinions that reflect local perspectives on the issues addressed in the radio program.
